Shangri La

The name makes one imagine a paradise on earth. Doris Duke spent some 60 years developing this estate into a mythical place of perfect living, accessible to only the invited during her lifetime. Although she had many homes, this is the one that speaks of her personal taste and interest; she was completely involved in the design and decoration down to the smallest details. As you walk through the colorful and ornately decorated rooms it is quite evident that this home completely speaks of her total appreciation of Islamic art and architecture.

Doris Duke was first exposed to Persian art while in London with her mother in the early 1930”s. Some years later, on an extended honeymoon with her first husband, James Cromwell, they spent some time in Iran. She had already begun the construction of this 6 acre estate with it breathtaking view of the Pacific. It seems this visit was the catalyst that inspired the décor that is reflected in every inch of the home.

As you enter through the shaded garden with its Banyan trees and lush tropical greenery you are greeted by the stark white windowless walls of the home. Typical of Islamic design this completely belies the ornate interior. The paneled ceiling of the foyer is exquisite. The inlaid colored glass just below the ceiling creates an atmosphere of peace and beauty that transforms the visitor into a suppliant. From this room you descend into a courtyard surrounded by an incredible collection of art in tiles.

The living room has the most splendid view of the pool and Playhouse- actually a two-bedroom building many would be happy to call home. As you enter the room you are mesmerized by a wall of three floor-to-ceiling window panels. With a push of a button the wall descends into the basement allowing the ocean breeze to completely change the aura of the room. (According to the docent there are only 2 such walls in the world). The wall facing the ocean has enormous glass doors that slide into pockets to complete the incredible union of land and sea.

Although every ceiling and wall seems to be an exquisite work of art, the dining room is another marvel of texture and pattern. The room is encased in silk to give the effect of a tent. The table is low and poufs surround it to give the guests a truly Persian dining experience. The 16th century Baccarat crystal chandelier and lamps in this room are simply exquisite.
Ms. Duke spent many years turning this home into a showcase. The rooms, gardens, and terraces reflect her admiration for the incredible beauty of Islamic form. The sight she chose with its splendid view of Diamond Head and the ocean is magnificent. Certainly money and taste share a beautiful marriage in this home. How fortunate we are that she provided for its establishment as a place to study and enjoy Islamic art.
